Norn9 (NORN9 ノルン+ノネット, Norn9 Norun+Nonetto) is an otome game for PlayStation Portable. It was developed by Otomate and published by Idea Factory. The game was originally going to be launched on May 23, 2013, but its release was delayed one week. A PlayStation Vita port, entitled Norn9: Var Commons, was released on December 11, 2014.[3] A fandisk titled Norn9: Last Era has been announced and was released on April 2, 2015. On March 2, 2014, it was announced that an anime adaptation was in the works.[4] The anime ran from January 7 to March 31, 2016.[5] [6]

Plot [edit]

Guided by a strange, haunting song, elementary-schooler Sorata Suzuhara from the Heisei Era is warped back in time to 1919, in a high-tech ship called Norn9. This ship, flying above towns resembling that of the Meiji or Taishō period, harbours The Gifted, a group of three girls and eight boys with special abilities. As he tries to find a way to return to his time, he discovers incredible secrets about the world and spacetime itself.

Characters [edit]

Main Protagonists [edit]

After the prologue, the player will no longer play as Sorata. At the beginning of the main story, the player will play as one of the three protagonists. Each has three different heroes by their sides.

Koharu (こはる)
Voiced by: Ayumi Fujimura
Koharu is a cheerful, innocent, sweet and kind girl with short pink hair and the ability to manipulate fire. Because of her ability's tremendous destructive power, people mocked and called her a monster, leading to her to forget her name. Her current name "Koharu" was then given to her by Shiro, who told her about the ship Norn9. Because she is the newest on the ship, she has the least knowledge and very observant of everything around her. As the series progresses, she develops a relationship with Kakeru.
Mikoto Kuga (久我 深琴, Kuga Mikoto)
Voiced by: Ayahi Takagaki
Mikoto is an elegant, refined girl with long black hair and the ability to create force fields (結界, kekkai) that can protect herself or others. Born into a noble Japanese family, she was raised to be calm, mature, and to have a strong sense of responsibility and duty. She also treasures all her friends dearly, sometimes abandoning her own safety and feelings to protect everyone. Since she has never had any contact with boys other than her childhood friend Sakuya, she has the most trouble adjusting to life on Norn9.
Nanami Shiranui (不知火 七海, Shiranui Nanami)
Voiced by: Asami Seto
Nanami is a quiet, shy, and seemingly emotionless girl with short wavy purple hair and the ability to erase other's memories. Despite her small frame, she has extremely high physical ability and is a talented kunoichi, carrying blades wherever she goes. After having erased an important memory from Senri's mind, she grew to hate her power and became wary to not get to close to other people.

Koharu's Target Group - Koharu Route: Main Heroes [edit]

Kakeru Yuiga (結賀 駆, Yuiga Kakeru)
Voiced by: Yūki Kaji
Kakeru is a bright, gentle and kind boy with short blonde hair and the ability to manipulate greenery. Due to his sometimes sadistic nature and love for teasing people, some of The Gifted think he is a great tactician or that he's just plain mean. As the series progresses, he and Koharu develop a relationship. He is noted for wearing an ear cuff on his left ear, in memory of his supposedly dead father Shiro. Kakeru later finds out how his father created conflicts all over the world to speed up history and reach year 2056, obsessed that his deceased lover Haruka will reincarnate under the same environment with the same soul and in the same body.
Senri Ichinose (市ノ瀬 千里, Ichinose Senri)
Voiced by: Hiro Shimono
Senri is a soft-spoken, gentle hikikomori with the ability to use water. Because his body couldn't handle the strain of harbouring a full ability, his brother Akito stole some of it with Aion's help. Although he mainly appears in Koharu's route, he is often shown as the prominent figure in scans and images by Otomate and classed as a main character.
Masamune Tōya (遠矢 正宗, Tōya Masamune)
Voiced by: Takuya Satō.
Masamune is a stern, intelligent boy with short orange hair and the ability to look into a person's past, but it requires an item from the person. As the son of the director of The World, he is mainly the one that liaises and contacts the organisation should the need arises. To prevent using his power involuntarily, he covers his right hand with a glove.

Mikoto's Target Group - Mikoto Route: Main Heroes [edit]

Natsuhiko Azuma (吾妻 夏彦, Asuma Natsuhiko)
Voiced by: Daisuke Ono
Natsuhiko is a handsome, stern young man, and, like Mikoto, takes duty very seriously.[7] He used to be a scientist, but became a weapon dealer instead, capitalising on his mechanical engineering strengths. Despite being a descendant of those that created Aion, he opposes the Reset with the belief that science is being abused and precious research will be destroyed. As such, he hunts the lives of The Gifted to prevent them from initiating the Reset, for their powers are meant to be combined by Aion to begin the phenomenon. In Natsuhiko's route, he later becomes the protagonist even though he is one of the antagonists in other routes. Some time in his route, Mikoto misunderstands him for being a sadist.
Sakuya Nijō (二条 朔也, Nijō Sakuya)
Voiced by: Mitsuki Saiga
Sakuya is Mikoto's caring and gentlemanly childhood friend with the ability to see the future. Like her, he was born into a noble Japanese family and promised that he will die protecting the girl he loves, which is implied to be her.[8] He is notable for matching his white ribbon tying back his hair to Mikoto's twin white ribbons. His power, while incredible, cannot be used out of his own free will and only comes in quick flashes or visions.
Itsuki Kagami (加賀見 一月, Kagami Itsuki)
Voiced by: Kōji Yusa
Itsuki is a flirtatious young man whose constant attempts at charming girls and joking, laid-back attitude leads others to distrust him. He is the ability to manipulate dreams passed down from his deceased sister Kazuha,[9] which he uses subtly to help his friends see their true desires sometimes. He often teases Mikoto for fun and enjoys watching her get aggravated.[10]

Nanami's Target Group - Nanami Route: Main Heroes [edit]

Akito Shukuri (宿吏 暁人, Shukuri Akito)
Voiced by: Noriaki Sugiyama
Akito is a rough, violent boy with long dark blue hair and Senri's older brother. Because Senri's body couldn't take the strain of harbouring a full ability, he took some of it with the help of Aion, eventually taking away all of it and asking Nanami to erase Senri's memories to let his younger brother leave in freedom. He initially hates Nanami after she erased the memory of him and Senri's family ties but starts to forgive and fall in love with her. He sometimes has tsundere tendencies and is a very good cook.
Ron Muroboshi (室星 ロン, Muroboshi Ron)
Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita
Ron is the oldest among The Gifted, but doesn't have an ability as he turns out to be the traitor among them working for Natsuhiko.
Heishi Otomaru (乙丸 平士, Otomaru Heishi)
Voiced by: Hiroyuki Yoshino
Heishi is a carefree, energetic and friendly boy who can be considered the mood-maker of The Gifted, and is best friends with Itsuki. He has the ability to use telepathy.

Sub Characters [edit]

Sorata Suzuhara (鈴原 空汰, Suzuhara Sorata)
Voiced by: Atsushi Abe
A briefly playable character from the Heisei Era during the prologue and the epilogue. After being warped to the past upon hearing a mysterious song, he attempts to find a way back, inevitably stumbling on a huge conflict and dark secrets of the world and spacetime.
Shirō Yuiga (結賀 史狼, Yuiga Shirō)
Voiced by: Kenji Hamada
Kakeru's father and the main antagonist of the series for causing conflicts all over the world in an attempt to speed history up to reach year 2056 and revive his dead lover Haruka. A genius engineer and weapons manufacturer, he met Koharu while traveling and gave her her name.
Setsu Takishima (滝島 雪, Takushima Setsu)
Voiced by: Mitsuhiro Ichiki
Natsuhiko's assistant and co-pilot who is an extreme masochist.
Aion (アイオン)
Voiced by: Nagi Yanagi
A robotic cyborg created by Sorata Suzuhara as an adult in the past, designed as a tool to initiate the Reset. Although it mostly manifests as a young girl with long blueish-white curly hair and wearing a white dress, it can also take on a male form. Despite being born a machine, she loves Sorata dearly and locks him in a cold sleep before initiating the 4th Reset so as to let him live, reverting him back to his child self and spawning the events of the story.
Kazuha Kagami (加賀見 和葉, Kagami Kazuha)
Voiced by: Miho Arakawa
Itsuki's younger sister and one of the characters who appears in Norn9: Last Era.
Motohisa Tōya (遠矢 基久, Tōya Motohisa)
Voiced by: Yōji Ueda
Masamune's father and the director of The World. He is one of the characters who appears in Norn9: Last Era.
Nagisa Totonose (徒々枝 凪沙, Totonose Nagisa)
Voiced by: Ryōka Yuzuki
A messenger and representative of The World and Natsuhiko's older sister. She is one of the characters who appears in Norn9: Last Era.
Yahiro Saishō (西所 弥広, Saishō Yahiro)
Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura
He was Heishi's guardian and is one of the characters who appears in Norn9: Last Era.

Anime [edit]

On March 2, 2014, Idea Factory announced that Norn9: Norn + Nonette has an anime in the works during the "Norn9 with Ark & for Spica" event at Tokyo's Nakano Sun Plaza.[11] The anime aired from January 7[12] to March 31, 2016. The opening theme is "Kazakiri" by Nagi Yanagi[13] and the ending theme is "Zero Tokei" by Kaori Oda. On December 29, 2015, the anime was licensed by Sentai Filmworks in North America.[14]

The series was streamed on Hulu and Anime Network.[15]

  1. ^ Credited as オープニングテーマ制作担当プロデューサー (Producer in Charge of Opening Theme)
  2. ^ All English titles are taken from Sentai Filmworks.

Music [edit]

The game's background music was written by Australian composer Kevin Penkin. Famed Final Fantasy series composer Nobuo Uematsu wrote the game's main theme, which was arranged by Penkin. Three pieces of theme music are used throughout the game. The opening is melee, the ending theme is many universes, and the insert song is Sunadokei wa Karanokara (砂時計は空の空, The Hourglass is the Futility of Futilities ). All three songs are performed by Nagi Yanagi.[17] For Norn9: Last Era, the opening theme is foe while the ending theme is skyscape. Both songs are also performed by Yanagi.
